Thinking skills

Thinking Tools 4 Me  has many thinking tools and routines you can use in your classroom.  From See-Think-Wonder and Timed-Pair-Share to Compass Points and Circle of Viewpoints there are many to choose from.

You can also download posters to display in your class from  the foot of the page (in .ppt format).

Collaborative Writing

For a bit of fun try this collaborative writing tool from Google. You can write a few words and then a famous writer joins in, writing with you in their own style.  They might change or delete your words using their own style.  They might add an adjective or change a verb and your completed work may have additions from many authors such as Edgar Allan Poe, Dickens and Shakespeare, colour coded, so you know who has intervened!

Bloom's taxonomy

Morag McGinlay has made a video on skills for learning. life and work, showing an exemplification of skills progression relating to the Es and Os of aspects of Health and Wellbeing.

The Scottish Government published Building the Curriculum 4: Skills for Learning, Skills for Life and Skills for Work in 2009. This document is the fourth in the series of Curriculum for Excellence guidance documents and is aimed at all those who support children and young people in developing skills for learning, life and work. It sets out key messages about how children and young people develop and apply skills as part of Curriculum for Excellence and shows how skills for learning, life and work are embedded across the curriculum, both through the Experiences and Outcomes and in the senior phase of learning.

EAL Profile of Competence

You can download the EAL Profile of Competence from Education Scotland for pupils learning English as an additional language.

An EAL Profile of Competence recording sheet exists for each line of development of language for each age and stage.  It is recommended that profiles are updated at least twice each year with the class teacher and the EAL teacher.

100 word Challenge

The 100 Word Challenge is a weekly creative writing challenge for children. Each week a prompt is given, which can be a picture or a series of individual words and the children can use up to 100 words to write a creative piece. This can be posted on a class blog which links to the 100 Word Challenge blog where others can comment on the children’s writing.

This limited word count with a focused theme and a guaranteed audience gives children a huge motivation for writing. Reluctant writers feel safe with only 100 words to write, while those more advanced writers can find a real challenge with the restriction to 100 words.
